A Flow Computer is an advanced electronic device used in industrial processes to accurately calculate, monitor, and record flow rates and totalized flow of liquids, gases, and steam. It collects signals from field instruments such as flow meters, pressure transmitters, and temperature sensors, then applies industry-standard calculations (e.g., API, AGA standards) to determine corrected flow values under standard or base conditions.

How it works (simple explanation)

  • Signal Input – The device receives signals from:
    • Flow meters (pulse, 4–20 mA, frequency)
    • Pressure transmitters
    • Temperature sensors
  • Compensation & Correction – It corrects raw flow readings by compensating for:
    • Temperature changes
    • Pressure variations
    • Fluid properties (density, compressibility)
  • Calculation – Using programmed equations (e.g., AGA3, AGA7, ISO 5167), it calculates:
    • Instantaneous flow rate
    • Standard volume flow
    • Mass flow
    • Totalized flow
  • Output & Logging – Results are displayed locally and transmitted to SCADA/DCS systems via communication protocols.
