Ball valves are quarter-turn valves designed to control or shut off the flow of liquids or gases in a pipeline. They use a spherical ball with a hole (bore) through the center. When the hole aligns with the pipe, fluid flows freely; when the ball rotates 90°, the hole becomes perpendicular to the pipeline and stops the flow.

How it works (simple explanation)
A ball valve works by rotating a ball with a drilled hole inside the valve body.
- Open Position – The hole in the ball is aligned with the pipe, allowing fluid to flow through.
- Closed Position – The ball rotates 90°, and the solid side of the ball blocks the flow.
- Quarter-Turn Operation – A handle or actuator rotates the ball quickly between open and closed states.
This simple mechanism allows rapid and reliable shut-off with minimal leakage.
