Butterfly Valves

Product Overview

Butterfly valves are quarter-turn valves used to regulate, start, or stop the flow of fluids in pipelines. They consist of a circular disc mounted on a rotating shaft inside the pipe. When the valve handle or actuator turns the shaft, the disc rotates to either allow or block the flow.

Butterfly valves are widely used because they are compact, lightweight, and cost-effective, making them suitable for large-diameter pipelines and systems where space and weight are important considerations. They can be operated manually or automatically using electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators.

How it works (simple explanation)

A butterfly valve works using a rotating disc placed in the center of the pipe.

  • When the valve is fully open, the disc rotates parallel to the flow, allowing fluid to pass with minimal resistance.
  • When the valve is closed, the disc rotates perpendicular to the flow and blocks the passage.
  • The valve operates with a quarter-turn (90° rotation) from fully open to fully closed.

This simple mechanism allows quick flow control with minimal mechanical components.

What it measures

Butterfly valves do not measure process variables. Instead, they control or isolate fluid flow in a system.

They influence:

  • Flow rate
  • Flow direction
  • System isolation

Key advantages

  • Compact design – Requires less space than many other valve types
  • Lightweight construction – Easy to install and handle
  • Fast operation – Quarter-turn operation allows quick opening and closing
  • Cost-effective – Lower cost compared to gate or globe valves in large sizes
  • Low pressure drop when fully open
  • Suitable for large pipe diameters
  • Compatible with automation (electric or pneumatic actuators)

Applications

Butterfly valves are commonly used in many industries, including:

  • Water treatment plants
  • HVAC systems
  • Oil and gas pipelines
  • Chemical processing plants
  • Food and beverage production
  • Power generation
  • Fire protection systems
  • Marine and shipbuilding

They are especially useful in large flow systems where quick shutoff is required.

Installation

Proper installation ensures reliable valve performance and long service life.

Installation guidelines:

  • Ensure the pipeline is clean and free from debris before installation.
  • Install the valve with the disc slightly open to prevent seat damage.
  • Check that the valve orientation matches the flow direction if specified by the manufacturer.
  • Tighten flange bolts evenly and gradually to avoid distortion.
  • Verify actuator alignment and operation before commissioning.
  • Perform a leak test after installation.

Butterfly valves can generally be installed in horizontal or vertical pipelines.
