Segment Valves
Product Overview
Segment valves, often called segmented ball valves, are quarter-turn control valves designed for precise flow regulation in pipelines. Instead of a full spherical ball, these valves use a V-shaped or segmented ball that rotates inside the valve body to control the flow of liquids, gases, or slurries.
They combine the tight shutoff capability of a ball valve with the modulating control performance of a control valve, making them ideal for demanding industrial applications such as chemical processing, pulp & paper, power plants, and oil & gas systems.

How it works (simple explanation)
A segment valve operates using a rotating segmented ball inside the valve body.
- The valve actuator rotates the segmented ball 90° (quarter-turn).
- The V-notch or segment opening aligns with the flow path.
- As the valve opens, the notch gradually increases the flow area.
- As it closes, the notch reduces the flow until it completely blocks the pipeline.
This design provides accurate flow control and stable throttling performance.
What it measures
Segment valves do not directly measure parameters but control and regulate important process variables such as:
- Flow rate of liquids or gases
- Pressure in process pipelines
- Slurry and viscous fluid flow
- Process control stability
They are often integrated into automated systems controlled by Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) or Distributed Control System (DCS) platforms.
Key advantages
- Excellent flow control due to V-notch or segmented ball design
- High rangeability for precise throttling
- Strong resistance to clogging, suitable for slurry or fibrous fluids
- Fast quarter-turn operation
- Tight shutoff capability
- Compact and durable construction
- Low maintenance requirements
Applications
Segment valves are widely used in industries where accurate flow control and durability are required.
Common applications include:
- Oil and gas pipelines
- Chemical and petrochemical plants
- Pulp and paper processing
- Power generation plants
- Water and wastewater treatment
- Mining and slurry transport systems
- Food and beverage processing
Installation
Proper installation ensures reliable performance and long service life.
Installation guidelines:
- Install the valve in the correct flow direction as indicated by the arrow on the body.
- Ensure adequate pipeline support to prevent stress on the valve.
- Install with sufficient clearance for actuator operation and maintenance.
- Verify actuator alignment and calibration before operation.
- Flush the pipeline before installation to remove debris.
- Use appropriate gaskets and flange connections to prevent leakage.
